Black pepper comes from the pepper plant, which is found in hot and humid countries. The plants take three to four years to flower, berries then develop which are known as peppercorns. Peppercorns when ground are what we call pepper.
Black pepper makes food taste great. But it’s also doing something in the background.
The pepper stimulates your taste buds, which in turn send a message to your stomach to increase the hydrochloric acid secretion, which is how black pepper improves digestion. This acid id essential for digestion as it helps to break down food. Therefore, if you don’t produce enough, food can sit in the gut undigested which can lead to heart burn and gut ache. You may also start producing more unfriendly bacteria in the gut, which can cause gas, constipation or diarrhea.
Not only does it help in the production of hydrochloric acid but it also promotes sweating, urination and has antioxidant and antibacterial effects!
Tumerics’ most commonly known use is in curries but is also in mustard. It was once known as Indian Saffron due to its deep colour of yellow/orange and it has been used for cooking, healing and natural dye. Tumerics use dates back to ancient Chinese and Indian medicine, where it was used as an anti-inflammatory to treat: flatulence, jaundice, menstrual difficulties, toothache, bruises and chest pain.
The combination of these two celeb spices, turmeric and black pepper, has led scientists to believe there is a link between consuming these two spices and cancer prevention. Tumeric is a power herb but when it’s consumed on its own, it doesn’t have good absorption as its metabolized quickly in the liver.Scientists at the University of Michigan were researching the correlation between a compound found in black pepper and a compound found in turmeric. When these two compounds come together they are able to target cancer stem cells. A compound in black pepper helps a compound in turmeric absorb more readily, so when these are together, they can target cancer stem cells.
Taking these two spices can also help with pain and inflammation, weight loss and it has been known to be an anti-depressant.
It’s easy to incorporate both turmeric and black pepper especially if you are a smoothie drinker, a teaspoon of each will keep your gut happy.
