Rosemary is an amazing herb.  It can be used for numerous purposes. Its leaves have been used in the traditional medicine for centuries because it possesses some miraculous properties. One of the things rosemary has been known of is for improving memory.  In ancient Greece, it was used like a tradition: the students would often put rosemary sprigs in their hair when they were studying for their exams. The reference to rosemary can be also found in Hamlet when Ophelia declares: ‘There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance: pray, love, remember.’

According to numerous different studies, rosemary contains carnosic acid, which fights off free radical damage to the brain. Rosemary also contains some natural acids that help in protecting the cells of the body, as well as the DNA from free radical damage. The compounds in rosemary herb have the ability to prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical that induces the brain cells responsible for memory and reasoning to communicate with one another.

Scientists have performed series of tests which showed that rosemary essential oil from the herb increased the chances of remembering to do things in the future, by 60-75% compared with people who had not been exposed to the oil.

A study which was published in the “Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology” suggests that the chemical compound called 1,8-cineole is actually responsible for improved memory function. This study also claims that subjects inhaled rosemary extract before performing certain tasks while their stress levels, mood, speed and accuracy were tested. The more 1,8-cineole absorbed into the bloodstream was, the more positive the results were!

Rosemary is also used in modern-day herbal medicine as a mild painkiller, especially in cases of migraines, as well as digestive problems.
